Welcome to the web site of Minilya House & Garden, Maldon
The Tarrangower district in central Victoria has a long, rich and varied history, much of it still to be explored. The establishment of Maldon township following the discovery of gold in 1853 is one part of that history. For 70 or so years Maldon was driven by the boom or bust nature of gold mining and the town’s building stock, businesses, institutions and people were all heavily impacted by these cycles.
Minilya was constructed in 1900 during the town’s last golden boom. It has subsequently witnessed the full range of Maldon’s fortunes. After a long quiet spell from the 1930s to the 1950s, the renewal of Minilya and Maldon was driven by the National Trust’s ‘Notable Town’ classification in the mid-1960s.
This short history of Minilya and its owners touches on some of the changes in local conditions and society across a timeline stretching from the discovery of gold in 1853 through to the present day.
